While you’re popping champagne and toasting the new year, hundreds of recently enacted bills will go into effect. Here are a few you should know about. The minimum wage for all employers in California will increase to $16.50. We currently have the second highest unemployment rate of any state behind only Nevada. This increase will only make it worse, particularly for California’s youth and others just starting to join the workforce. Paychecks will be hit by a tax increase. The State Disability Insurance rate is increasing from 1.1 to 1.2 percent. As KCRA in Sacramento noted, “That means a couple or individual with $100,000 in taxable annual wages will have $100 more total withheld from their pay this upcoming year, or about $8 a month because of the tax increase, for example.” For property owners, several attempts to destroy your rights to protest new and higher water rates go into effect. Under Proposition 218, water agencies must send notices to customers ahead of time with information on how to protest the rate hike. If a majority protest, the rate increase can’t go into effect. But Assembly Bill 2257 creates a protest procedure separate from the notice required by Prop. 218 and appears merely to layer on added – and superfluous – requirements for the sole purpose of hindering taxpayers’ constitutional ability to approve or reject taxes. Another assault on property owner rights is Senate Bill 1072 because it could leave taxpayers without proper compensation for overcharges on their water bills by offering only future credits instead of actual refunds. There is a huge difference between a “credit” for future charges and an actual refund. If a taxpayer moves, how will he or she be compensated for the violation of constitutional rights if the agency merely applies the overcharge to reduce rates paid by others in the future? AB 1827 is another concern because it tries to add potentially unconstitutional charges to your water bill based on speculative factors like “maximum potential water use” and “peaking” factors. This is in direct contravention of Prop. 218 which provides that, “No fee or charge may be imposed for a service unless that service is actually used by, or immediately available to, the owner of the property in question. Fees or charges based on potential or future use of a service are not permitted.” Basing a charge on “maximum potential water use” clearly then is not permitted under Prop. 218. Further, in the absence of time-of-use technology, peaking factors are generally make-believe. Legal challenges to AB 1827 are a near certainty. Fortunately, many of those got left on the cutting room floor, but one that did pass and goes into effect this year, Senate Bill 1441, is very concerning. If a citizen-initiated recall, initiative or referendum is determined to have an insufficient number of valid signatures, the proponents have the right to review rejected signatures and the reason for the rejection. But SB 1441 sets an unreasonable 60-day time limit on the review process and adds a new requirement for proponents to pay the costs of the review, which could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Nothing in the bill prevents a county from running out the clock by providing inadequate access. But that’s probably the intent. Was it all bad news from your California government this year? No, of course not. For everyone who has been waiting for Sacramento to finally address the pressing concerns of state residents, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation giving the state three new official state symbols: the banana slug (state slug), Dungeness crab (state crustacean), and black abalone (state seashell). Don’t say they never did anything for you. Happy New Year! Jon Coupal is president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.Sridhar Vembu , CEO of Zoho Corporation , has called for Indians to embrace self-reliance and prioritize indigenous innovation to address the country’s unique challenges. In a post on X, Vembu emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on foreign products and services by leveraging India’s vast talent pool. India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for “To earn true respect in the world, Indians have to develop deep capabilities in India. Achievements abroad won't do it. I hope smart Indians keep this in mind.," he stated, urging businesses and entrepreneurs to focus on building homegrown technologies tailored to India’s specific needs. Vembu's message highlights the critical role of local innovation in strengthening India's global standing, particularly in technology and manufacturing. He advocates for a shift in mindset, where nurturing domestic talent takes precedence over relying on external resources. Sharing his personal approach, Vembu remarked, “As an Indian, I work hard to retain talent in India because we so badly need the talent to develop India's technology capability.” He contrasted this with America’s reliance on imported talent, proposing a model that fosters sustainable growth through local skill development. — svembu (@svembu) The conversation also delved into the foundational role of economic growth in national development. Vembu stressed the importance of addressing social inequalities, ensuring that every segment of society has access to opportunities. “National development cannot be achieved if large sections of society are left behind,” he noted, advocating for inclusive growth that benefits all. Vembu also touched upon the complexities of international talent migration. While acknowledging the success of countries like the United States in attracting global talent, he questioned the long-term implications of such strategies. He argued that India must focus on retaining and nurturing its own talent to advance its technological capabilities. Reflecting on America’s history, Vembu noted how many companies have preferred importing talent over developing it domestically, often neglecting the potential of their local workforce. In a broader context, Vembu posed a critical question about the trade-offs of pursuing global rankings. “Is it worth the bragging rights to be number one in GDP or AI, achieved with imported talent, but at the price of leaving your own people behind?” His reflections underscore the importance of self-reliance and inclusive development in achieving sustainable progress.

( MENAFN - AFP) Japanese Stocks rose Friday on a weaker yen after a muted day on Wall Street following the Christmas holiday. Japan's key NIKKEI index was up more than 1 percent in morning trade, after the yen hit 158.08 per US dollar on Thursday evening -- its lowest level in almost six months. The Nikkei had closed up 1.1. percent on Thursday, boosted by comments from the bank of Japan chief and share price gains for top-selling automaker Toyota. "Today's Japanese market is expected to start with an upswing, continuing the upward momentum of the previous day's Japanese market, driven by the weak yen, while the US market was slightly mixed," said Kosuke Oka, an analyst at Monex Securities. The yen was "marginally stronger" on Friday, Bloomberg reported, after data showed inflation in Tokyo rose for a second month in December. Other positive figures from Japan showed industrial production declined less than expected in November while retail sales came in higher than estimated last month. With the country's unemployment rate holding at 2.5 percent in November -- low by international standards but slightly above Japan's pre-pandemic average -- Moody's Analytics said Friday that the data confirmed their view that "employment conditions are wobbly". Investor attention is now focused "on whether the Nikkei average will expand its rise to recover to the 40,000 points range by the end of the year", added Oka from Monex. Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda had bewildered observers last week by suggesting a prolonged pause in the institution's monetary policy tightening, in the face of domestic and international economic uncertainties, which had sent the Japanese currency tumbling. On Wednesday, Ueda said rates would be "adjusted" if the situation continued to improve on the economic and price fronts, leaving investors without a clear signal on a possible interest rate hike and contributing to the yen's slide. "With the calendar year winding down and little in the way of tier-one economic data, the market is content mainly to drift until something shakes it from its slumber -- likely a late-year squeeze or perhaps a Trump-driven shift in global economic sentiment," said Stephen Innes from SPI Asset Management, ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump retaking the White House in January. In New York on Thursday, major indices veered in and out of positive territory in a sleepy post-Christmas session. The broad-based S&P 500 finished down less than 0.1 percent. Large tech companies that have led the market in much of 2024 mostly took a breather, including Netflix, Tesla and Amazon, which all declined. In Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai were down Friday morning. Seoul dropped about 1.5 percent as South Korea struggles to shake off political turmoil sparked by suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration that shocked the world early this month. Sydney, Wellington and Taipei rose. By STAFF REPORTERS The bodies of 4 passengers who died on a lonely mountainside in a fatal plane crash in Morobe’s Tewae-Siassi District, are finally on their way home. They will be airlifted by a joint fleet of Hevi-Lift and PNG Defence Force choppers out of the Sapmanga crash site and conveyed directly to Lae this morning. WHILST social media has gone viral with the identity of all the four passengers and the pilot of the ill-fated plane that crashed two days before Christmas, the PNG Accident Investigation Commission (AIC) says the identities of the deceased will not be released as the matter is still under investigation and that it is now the custodian of the crash and will release the names when it is appropriate PNGAIC manager engineering investigations and labs, Emerson Buidal, in a news conference, said the AIC is an independent agency and is guided by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 13 of the Aircraft Accident & Incident Investigation regulations based on International Standards Recommended Practices. “Thus, Annex 13 also protects the identity of the deceased passengers as AIC is the custodian so the names cannot be released,” Mr Buidal said. North Coast Aviation operations manager, Jordan Thiele, when contacted yesterday, responded in an email that: “All questions related to the accident cannot be answered currently as it is an open investigation. “Regarding questions I can answer, the pilots name is David Sandery and he is from Milne Bay Province, he has over 15000 hours flying in PNG. There were four passengers on board the aircraft, the aircraft itself was flown the previous day and had no issues reported. “The aircraft had just come out of a normal scheduled maintenance and had no issues. NCA has served Morobe for more than 30 years, with the first flight out of Wau in 1990. “NCA has approached the Government numerous times for assistance but, other than the late honourable Sam Basil, have received no proper subsidy program or support. Other than that, all other questions will have to be posed to AIC PNG as we cannot yet comment.” Meanwhile, AIC’s Mr Buidal, in the conference yesterday, also stated that there is no black box onboard the North Coast Aviation aircraft that crashed. “But it is not an unusual case as most third level airline planes are not fitted with a black box,” the AIC told the Post-Courier yesterday. “NCA’s P2-SAM was not fitted with the black box.” Mr Buidal said there are certain limits for certain aircrafts and the planes ranging from 5750kg like Twin Otters and upwards are fitted with a black box. Instead, small light crafts are fitted with monitoring systems and in the case of the current tragic crash, a thorough investigation will verify the cause of the crash. “With or without the black box doesn’t stop the AIC from pursuing investigations as there are various components (sources) to extract information,” Buidal said.NEW YORK , Nov. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Why: Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, announces an investigation of potential securities claims on behalf of shareholders of Zeta Global Holdings Corp.
