(AP) — Defending the run has been one of the Green Bay Packers’ weaknesses over the last several years. Not so much lately, though. Green Bay limited San Francisco to 16 carries for 44 yards in a 38-10 rout of the 49ers on Nov. 24, with two-time All-Pro Christian McCaffrey gaining 31 yards on 11 attempts. Four nights later, the Packers beat Miami 30-17 by holding the Dolphins to 39 yards on 14 carries. It was the first time since 1995 — and only the second time since 1950 — that the Packers had allowed fewer than 45 yards rushing in back-to-back games within the same season. “I think we’re playing harder and harder each week,” first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said. “And that’s how you play good defense.” That defense needs to be at its best Thursday as the Packers (9-3) close a stretch of three games in 12 days by visiting the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions (12-1), who have the NFL’s highest-scoring offense thanks in part to a rushing attack featuring the speedy Jahmyr Gibbs and the physical David Montgomery. “Gibbs is a great running back,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark said. “I really think the offense really starts with him, honestly. He can do everything — receive, in-and-out runner, can do stretch, duo plays. We’ve got to have all hands on deck with Gibbs. And then Montgomery, he’s a great complement to him. He can do everything, also.” The Lions were the first team since the 1975 Miami Dolphins to rush for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in each of their first 11 games. The streak ended on Thanksgiving when the Lions rushed for 194 yards but didn’t have a touchdown on the ground in a 23-20 victory over the Chicago Bears. Green Bay outrushed Detroit 138-124 in the Packers’ 24-14 loss to the Lions on Nov. 3 at Lambeau Field. Montgomery rushed for 73 yards while Gibbs ran for 65 yards and a touchdown. Gibbs has 973 yards this season, which ranks fourth in the NFL. Montgomery ran for a combined 192 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions’ two games against the Packers last season. Green Bay’s run defense has come a long way since. The Packers have allowed 106.6 yards rushing per game this season, which ranks eighth in the league. The Packers haven’t closed a season in the top 10 in run defense since 2016 and have finished outside the top 20 in four of the last six years, including 26th in 2022 and 28th in 2023. “I think Haf’s doing a good job of mixing up the fronts and some of the coverages, but really it’s ultimately about tackling, swarming, getting many hats to the football,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “And our guys have really embraced that style of play.” The Packers are yielding 4.2 yards per carry to rank seventh in the league after finishing 22nd or worst in that category each of the last three seasons. They haven’t closed a season ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed per carry since 2017. Hafley says the improvement starts up front. “The interior part of our D-line has done such a good job these last few games,” Hafley said. “They really have. They’re hard to block. They’re staying in their gaps. They’re tearing off of blocks, and it’s the same thing with those defensive ends. They’re setting edges, they’re forcing the ball back inside, they’re getting off blocks and then we’re tackling and we’re running to the ball and there’s multiple people to the ball. “And when you turn on our tape right now and when you freeze it, you see that. You see a lot of guys around the football. And then you’re not afraid, right? Like if I have an open-field tackle and I know eight other guys are coming, I’m going to take my shot because I know if I miss, it’s going to be, ‘Bang, bang, bang,’ we’ve got three or four other guys there, and we’re starting to play faster.” Green Bay’s defense has the Lions’ attention. A prominent digital rights activist, who is transgender, confronted Rep. Nancy Mace at a public event Thursday, days after the congresswoman from South Carolina introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol. Evan Greer, the director of Fight for the Future, stood up during the kickoff panel at “The Summit of the Future of the Internet” at Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C., and displayed an LGBTQ pride flag. Mace was speaking alongside Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and radio host Charlamagne tha God on the topic “Bipartisan Tech Solutions to Unite a Nation.” “We have had dozens of trans people die this year because of the hate and lies that you are spreading,” Greer said, to applause from the audience, as she was escorted out of the room. “Are we building an internet with free speech for everyone or just the privileged few?” Mace responded by misgendering Greer and making a comment about her genitals, which the crowd booed at. A representative for Mace and Project Liberty, the organization that hosted the summit and invited Greer, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Greer’s organization is known for its viral protest efforts against internet censorship and surveillance and in support of net neutrality. Videos of Greer at the event have been viewed more than 1 million times on X, where conservative influencers and Mace have continued to misgender and insult Greer. In an interview with NBC News, Greer said that Project Liberty has yet to reach out to her or make any statements about the panel, her protest or Mace’s remarks. While Greer said she had hoped that other people, including cisgender people (who identify with their gender assigned at birth), would have joined her in opposing Mace’s presence in the panel, she said, “In the end, I was there in the room and I just could not sit silently.” “My goal is to call to the progressive tech policy community and ask ourselves, what is our strategy going into these next four years?” Greer said. “Are we going to try and curry favor with people whose goals are diametrically opposed to human rights, or are we going to draw some lines in the sand and build a meaningful strategy for collective resistance to the role that technology will play in carrying out human rights violations?” Greer said, “I’m not trying to convince her of anything, but really my goal was to spark a conversation within the tech policy space, to ask ourselves, ‘What are we actually fighting for?’” After taking office in 2021, Mace initially said she was pro-LGBTQ rights. But in recent days, she has made headlines and racked up engagement on social media by leading an anti-transgender campaign against the only trans member of Congress, Sarah McBride, one that has received the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson. McBride, whom Mace has repeatedly misgendered, said in a statement that she would follow the new bathroom rules as outlined by Johnson, even if she disagrees with them. In her congressional office, McBride will have a private bathroom, while all other public bathrooms in the Capitol will be banned for transgender people.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas —Jerry Treñas/Facebook ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Mayor Jerry Treñas has announced his readiness to retreat into a quieter life after 39 years in politics after the city’s voters choose their new leaders in next year’s midterm elections. The mayor, in a statement released on Dec. 6, said he was looking forward to a “stress-free life” after years in public service since he was appointed as city councilor at the age of 29 in 1986. Treñas, 67, said he would be focusing on spending more time with his grandchildren and returning to his practice of law. READ: Iloilo City approves P4.1-B local budget for 2025 “I will be enjoying my six lovely granddaughters as they grow up, and I will also engage in limited law practice. I have already requested the lawyers at the law office to clean my room so I will have a place to go in case I need to keep myself busy,” he said. Treñas, who has five children with wife Rosalie, had been on medical leave since late September this year after he underwent a bile duct procedure in Manila. On Dec. 2, he said the bag attached to his bile duct was removed. “I feel much stronger now. Moving around is easier without the tube and bag and I’m incredibly grateful for this progress,” Treñas said. “This is my second life, granted by the grace of our Lord, and I intend to enjoy it while I still can. God is so good,” he added. The mayor was expected to return to work on Dec. 9. Treñas originally intended to run for another term, a third for this tenure and his sixth overall as mayor. However, he changed his mind on Oct. 3 and decided to instead back his daughter, mayoralty candidate Raisa Treñas-Chu, who is serving as his executive assistant. Treñas-Chu is running against independent candidate Roland Magahin, a former president of the city’s Terminal Market Vendors Associations. “I will be like a tutor to my daughter Raisa. I will always be there,” said Treñas of his daughter, should she win the elections. “I [also] intend to share my limited time and expertise with local chief executives who seek my advice and assistance in any way I can,” he added. Treñas served as city councilor from 1986 to April 1992. He became mayor in 2001, serving three terms until 2010. He also served as congressman of the city’s lone district from 2010 to 2019. A LIFE TAKEN Ponciano Onia Jr. smiles broadly as he shows a copy of his certificate of candidacy for reelection as councilor of Umingan, Pangasinan, which he filed in October. Onia, who is also the president of Abono Partylist, was killed on Saturday. —Ponciano Onia Facebook CALASIAO, PANGASINAN, Philippines — The president of Abono Partylist, which represents agriculture and marginalized sectors in Congress, was shot and killed here while on his way home to Umingan town in eastern Pangasinan on Saturday night, in an incident that his local ally believed might be politically motivated. Ponciano Onia Jr., 59, who was seeking reelection as councilor of Umingan in next year’s elections, was peppered with bullets by unidentified gunner while driving his vehicle in Lubong village on his way to his residence in Barangay San Leon, Umingan at 7:45 p.m., the police report said. Onia died while receiving treatment at the Umingan community hospital at 8:40 p.m., police said. His two employees, who were with him inside his car, were unharmed. In a social media post, Umingan Vice Mayor Chris Evert Tadeo condemned the “senseless and most inhumane act of killing” of Onia, hinting at politics as the primary motive behind the killing. Tadeo said: “Ang karahasan at walang-awang pamamaslang sa isang indibidwal para sa sariling interes at pulitika ay walang puwang sa isang maayos at mapayapang komunidad (Violence and the merciless killing of an individual for self-interest and politics has no place in a healthy and peaceful community).” “We hope the death of a person who thought nothing but the welfare and rights of the people, will be given justice,” he added. However, Tadeo did not say who he was alluding to. The Police Regional Office in Ilocos Region (PRO 1), in a statement on Sunday, declared its “full commitment in conducting a thorough and impartial investigation” into the killing of Onia. PRO 1 Director Police Brig. Gen. Lou Evangelista said their investigators were “working tirelessly to gather all relevant evidence and testimonies from witnesses [and] coordinating with local authorities to ensure that every aspect of this incident is thoroughly examined.” “This tragic incident has sent ripples of grief throughout our community, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and constituents of Councilor Onia. We strongly condemn this criminal act,” he said in the statement. The police found eight fired cartridges for a caliber .45 gun and two jacketed deformed card bullets. “The safety and security of everyone is our top priority, and we are dedicated in intensifying our police operations as we are also approaching the election period,” the statement read. The police urged anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward and assist their investigators. PRO 1 has yet to confirm or deny allegations that the killing of Onia was politically motivated. “Continuous followup investigation/operation is being conducted for the possible arrest of the suspect/s and to establish the motive behind the shooting incident,” PRO 1 said in another statement. Abono Partylist expressed shock and sadness over the “senseless killing” of its president. “We deeply mourn [his] tragic passing. Our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and Abono Partylist family,” the group’s statement, issued by party list chair Rosendo So, said on Sunday afternoon. “May his legacy inspire future generations,” it added. Abono Partylist is represented by Rep. Raymond Estella in the House of Representatives. He could not be reached for comment on Sunday. Pangasinan has had its share of suspected political killings in recent years. Last Nov. 3, Dexter Jimenez, the former village chief of Gabon in Calasiao, was shot and killed while his wife was injured in a shooting incident. On Oct. 22, 2023, Arnel Adolfo Flormata, 41 and a candidate for barangay captain in Aguilar, Pangasinan, was shot and killed shortly after speaking at a campaign rally in Barangay Bayaoas. In December 2023, Reynaldo Escobar Jr., 51, former barangay chairman of Tanggal-Sawang of Umingan town, was also shot and killed by unidentified assailants in Barangay Bolintaguen, San Quintin. Sto. Tomas Councilor Benjamin Oculto, Jr. of this town was shot dead outside a church here on Dec. 16, 2018. He was to run in the 2019 elections for vice mayor of his town.
