Blink Twice ( now streaming on MGM+ ) marks the arrival of Zoe Kravitz, filmmaker. We know her for on-screen roles in The Batman and Big Little Lies , but this film establishes her as a director worthy of our eyeballs. She and E.T. Feigenbaum co-wrote this bold and outrageous satirical thriller starring I Wanna Dance With Somebody star Naomi Ackie as a waitress swept into the money-is-no-object sphere of a one-percenter played, against type, by Channing Tatum. This is Kravitz’s assured and confident behind-the-camera debut, proving she has significant visual acumen and more than a little something to say. BLINK TWICE : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: We meet Frida (Ackie) as she sits on the toilet and scrolls on her phone. Note to filmmakers everywhere: This precise scenario is how you make your protagonist relatably human, right off the bat. But don’t worry, we’ll be with her every step of the way. Frida seems to aspire to be a fancy manicurist who paints tiny little animals on fingernails, but reality dictates that she works for a catering company, serving food to rich people. One of the faces she lingers on during her toilet-scrolling is Slater King (Tatum), a baguillionaire tech CEO who was #MeToo’d (for reasons that go unspecified) and stepped down and went away for a while and came back to public life to apologize over and over again and try to make himself seem more human by saying he has chickens now. Chickens! Granted, they’re on the private island he purchased. But, chickens! How down to freaking earth can you get ? Well, Slater’s at the event where Frida and her bestie/roomie Jess (Alia Shawkat) are pouring champagne and, per their supervisor’s instruction, being “invisible.” The ladies finish their shift and pull out the evening wear they stashed in their bags and finagle their way into the afterparty with a couple of shrewd moves and more than a bit of charm. And you know, Slater seems like a sweet, respectful guy – a sweet, respectful guy who gives Frida a lot of one-on-one attention. Now, this is where the movie threatens to become an explosion of celeb cameos (that end up not being cameos at all, mind you): Christian Slater as a Polaroid photographer named Vic, Simon Rex as a chef named Cody, Adriana Arjona as survivor-reality-show celeb Sarah, Kyle MacLachlan as Slater’s psychotherapist, Geena Davis as one of Slater’s handlers, Haley Joel Osment as a wannabe crypto bro I think. The less-famous ones are pothead du jour Heather (Trew Mullen), bland skinny blond boy Lucas (Levon Hawke) and Camilla (Liz Caribel), who just sold an astrology app she developed. Who are all these people? Slater’s entourage of pals old and brand new. And he’s just asked Frida and Jess to join the exclusive after-afterparty where everyone piles onto his private jet and jets out to his island for an unspecified amount of time to drink and eat and do drugs and swim and lay around and wake up and wonder why everything seems perfect and fun even when everything doesn’t seem exactly right. I mean, Slater employs an omnipresent armed security guy at all times (I guess famous people need these guys?), the multiple guest rooms are stocked with clothing for everyone because they all left on a whim and packed nothing (Frida and Jess chalk this up to the way extremely rich people do things) and the staff, none of whom speak English, always wear strange looks on their faces and the one woman is tasked with murdering the shit out of the venomous snakes infesting the estate (they’re just vipers! NBD!). Are these red flags? HELL YES THEY ARE. What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Blink Twice is a tantalizing, if occasionally uneven blend of Glass Onion , Midsommar , eat-the-rich stuff like Saltburn and Triangle of Sadness , and movies that make fun of rich people’s culinary palates a la The Menu or Flux Gourmet . And it’s of a similar mind to recent female-perspective artsy-genre pieces Love Lies Bleeding and The Substance . Get Out is a clear influence here, too. Performance Worth Watching: The cast is Blink ’s strength: It’s a lot of fun watching Tatum toy with his persona by playing a “nice guy” with some sinister fringes. But Ackie carries this film with all her strength, truly showing her skill and appeal in a project that didn’t squander her talent like I Wanna Dance with Somebody did. And she shares a number of funny, quietly electrifying scenes with Arjona, a stunning talent who was just damn great in Andor and especially Hit Man . Oh, and if there was an awards category for Best Comeback by a Veteran Actress in a Supporting Role, it’d go to Davis for her brief, but hilarious turn here as a Ghislaine Maxwell-type (the Lead Role award would go to Demi Moore for The Substance , natch). Memorable Dialogue: Sarah has A Bad Feeling About This: “I’m having a great time here. But I also have this feeling like I’m” – pause for a comically long amount of time – “not.” Sex and Skin: Nothing sexy about the slightly-more-than-implied moments of sexual assault, so consider yourself warned (the film opens with a trigger-warning title card). Our Take: You will not be surprised in the least that the rich white guys in this movie are awful human beings who might’ve inspired a title change to Gaslight Island (Kravitz’s original title was Pussy Island , but that was nixed for obvious reasons). You therefore could ding Blink Twice for its somewhat predictable plotting and big, bold, punch-in-the-nose approach to feminist-revenge themes, but I’d argue that such a lack of subtlety emerges when the one with something to say is angry about hierarchical and sexual power dynamics and wants to lash out. This movie isn’t a persuasive essay – it’s a fight. You FEEL that punch in the nose, and you might emerge from this movie a little bit bloody. And that’s precisely the point. Kravitz’s heightened sensibility sells the film as go-for-the-throat satire. She wink-nudges us with an amusing, far-fetched, slightly absurdist premise (why would Frida and Jess drop everything to jet off to wherever with a bunch of strangers? They’re enamored with the lives of the uber-rich, and want to get a taste. Aren’t you, too, at least a little?). She camera, mise-en-scene and sharp edits to amplify the comedy and horror. And she assembles a chemically potent ensemble that’s game for anything – borderline-ridiculous riffs on stereotypes, dark comedy, eye-widening brutality. The first stretch of the film feels like a slightly too-long uneasy-tease, but once Ackie and Arjona’s characters connect at about the halfway point, it finds its footing as a comically horrific narrative. Some moments are hysterically funny and some are grotesque, searingly so. Kravitz’s most consistent thread is a sense of righteousness that isn’t always 100 percent serious, but it’s serious e-f—ing-nough when it absolutely counts. Our Call: Blink Twice may be a little bit uneven, but it’s not easily forgotten. More Kravitz behind the camera please. STREAM IT. Weekly Horoscope Aquarius, November 24 to 30, 2024 predicts a fresh start!

Tweet Facebook Mail The man accused of fatally setting a woman on fire inside a New York City subway train used his shirt to fan the flames, causing her to become engulfed in the blaze, a prosecutor said. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the US illegally, made his first court appearance and was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court. He appeared briefly before a judge and wore a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt. He did not speak. He will remain jailed ahead of his next court date on Friday. READ MORE: Bill Clinton is out of the hospital after being treated for the flu Sebastian Zapeta, accused of setting a woman on fire inside a New York City subway train, appears in court. (AP) The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on a stationary F train at the Coney Island station in Brooklyn. Police said Tuesday that identification of the victim was still "pending at this time." Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who was sitting motionless in the train car and may have been sleeping, and used a lighter to set her clothing on fire. Zapeta then used his shirt to fan the flames, leading to her becoming engulfed in the fire, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said on Tuesday. Zapeta then sat at a bench on the subway platform and watched, according to police. Rottenberg added that under interrogation Zapeta said he didn't know what happened, noting that he consumes alcohol. But he alleged that Zapeta identified himself to interrogators in images related to the attack. READ MORE: Prosecutors withdraw appeal of dismissed case against Alec Baldwin in set shooting Zapeta will next appear in court later this week. (AP) Video posted to social media appeared to show the woman standing inside the train ablaze as some people look on from the platform, and at least one officer walks by. NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta said Sunday that several officers had responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene "the way it's supposed to be" while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. They were eventually able to douse the fire, but "unfortunately, it was too late," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said — the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Zapeta was taken into custody Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after police got a tip from some teenagers who recognised him from images circulated by the police. READ MORE: Biden gives life in prison to 37 of 40 federal death row inmates The woman was declared dead at the scene. (CNN) A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta had been previously deported in 2018 but at some point reentered the US illegally. In a statement, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attack a "gruesome and senseless act of violence against a vulnerable woman" that would be "met with the most serious consequences." The crime — and the graphic video of it that ricocheted across social media — deepened a growing sense of unease among some New Yorkers about the safety of the subway system in a city where many residents take the subway multiple times each day. Overall, according to authorities, crime is down in the transit system this year when compared to last year — major felonies declined six per cent between January and November of this year and in 2023, data compiled by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority show. But murders are up, with nine killings this year through November compared to five in the same period last year. Earlier this month, a Manhattan jury acquitted Daniel Penny in the death of an agitated subway rider that the former Marine placed in a chokehold last year. The case became a flashpoint in ongoing debates over safety, homelessness and mental illness on the system. Policing the subway is also difficult, given the vast network of trains constantly moving between the system's 472 stations, with each stop containing multiple entry points and, in many stations, multiple floors and platforms. On Sunday, police at the station where the woman burned to death were patrolling a different area and responded after seeing and smelling smoke, authorities said. LOS ANGELES — Until he sustained a season-ending knee injury last week in the Western Conference final, Galaxy playmaker Riqui Puig was having a tremendous season. So I heard. I watched Puig play only twice this year, once in the Galaxy's season-opening 1-1 draw with Inter Miami and a second time in his team's Fourth of July defeat to LAFC at the Rose Bowl. Outside of short highlight clips on social media, I never saw the former Barcelona prospect, not even when he assisted on the goal that sent the Galaxy to the MLS Cup final. That wasn't a reflection of my interest. Some of my friends will make fun of me for publicly admitting this, but I like Major League Soccer. I covered the league in my first job out of college and have casually kept up with it since. I take my children to a couple of games a year. My 11-year-old son owns Galaxy and LAFC hats but no Dodgers or Lakers merchandise. People are also reading... But not this year. While the MLS Cup final between the Galaxy and New York Red Bulls will be shown on Fox and Fox Deportes, the majority of games are now exclusively behind a paywall, courtesy of the league's broadcasting deal with Apple. MLS Season Pass subscriptions were reasonably priced — $79 for the entire season for Apple TV+ subscribers, $99 for non-subscribers — but I was already paying for DirecTV Stream, Netflix, Amazon Prime, PlayStation Plus and who knows what else. MLS became a casualty in my household, as well as in many others, and the possibility of being out of sight and out of mind should be a concern for a league that is looking to expand its audience. Which isn't to say the league made a mistake. This was a gamble MLS had to take. Now in the second year of a 10-year, $2.5 billion deal with Apple, MLS did what Major League Baseball is talking about doing, which is to centralize its broadcasting rights and sell them to a digital platform. Regional sports networks have been decimated by cord cutting, making traditional economic models unsustainable. The move to Apple not only increased the league's broadcast revenues — previous deals with ESPN, Fox and Univision were worth a combined $90 million annually, according to multiple reports — but also introduced a measure of uniformity in the league. The quality of the broadcasts are better than they were under regional sports networks. Viewers know where to watch games and when, as every one of them is on Season Pass and most of them are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. local time either on Wednesday or Saturday. "That's been fueling our growth and driving our fan engagement," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Friday at his annual state of the league address. Apple and MLS declined to reveal the number of League Pass subscribers, but the league provided polling figures that indicated 94% of viewers offered positive or neutral reviews of League Pass. The average viewing time for a game is about 65 minutes for a 90-minute game, according to Garber. In other words, the League Pass is well-liked — by the people who have it. The challenge now is to increase that audience. The launch of League Pass last year coincided with the arrival of Lionel Messi, which presumably resulted in a wave of subscriptions. But the league can't count on the appearance of the next Messi; there is only one of him. MLS pointed to how its fans watch sports on streaming devices or recorded television than any other U.S. sports league, as well as how 71% of its fans are under the age of 45. The league also pointed to how it effectively drew more viewers to the Apple broadcast of Inter Miami's postseason opener with a livestream of a "Messi Cam' on TikTok, indicating further collaborations with wide-reaching entities could be in its future. Garber mentioned how Season Pass is available in other countries. The commissioner also made note of how Apple places games every week in front of its paywall. "What we have, really, is a communication problem," Garber said. "This is new, and we've got to work with Apple, we've got to work with our clubs and we've got to work with our partners to get more exposure to what we think is a great product." The greatest benefit to the league could be Apple's vested interest in improving the on-field product. MLS insiders said Apple has not only encouraged teams to sign more high-profile players but also pushed the league to switch to a fall-to-spring calendar more commonplace in other parts of the world, reasoning that doing so would simplify the process of buying and selling players. The on-field product is what matters. The on-field product is why MLS continues to face competition for viewers from overseas leagues. The on-field product is why the league hasn't succeeded in converting every soccer fan into a MLS fan. And ultimately, if casual viewers such as myself are to pay to watch the Galaxy or LAFC on a screen of some kind, the on-field product will be why. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel said Sunday that the body of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi who went missing in the United Arab Emirates has been found after he was killed in what it described as a “heinous antisemitic terror incident.” The UAE's Interior Ministry later said authorities arrested three perpetrators involved in the killing of Zvi Kogan. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Israel “will act with all means to seek justice with the criminals responsible for his death.” Israeli authorities did not say how they determined the killing of Kogan was a terror attack and offered no additional details. Kogan, 28, an ultra-Orthodox rabbi who went missing on Thursday, ran a kosher grocery store in the futuristic city of Dubai, where Israelis have flocked for commerce and tourism since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in the 2020 Abraham Accords . The agreement has held through more than a year of soaring regional tensions unleashed by Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack into southern Israel . But Israel's devastating retaliatory offensive in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon, after months of fighting with the Hezbollah militant group, have stoked anger among Emiratis, Arab nationals and others living in the the UAE. Iran, which supports Hamas and Hezbollah, has also been threatening to retaliate against Israel after a wave of airstrikes Israel carried out in October in response to an Iranian ballistic missile attack. The Emirati government did not respond to a request for comment. However, senior Emirati diplomat Anwer Gargash wrote on the social platform X in Arabic on Sunday that “the UAE will remain a home of safety, an oasis of stability, a society of tolerance and coexistence and a beacon of development, pride and advancement.” Early on Sunday, the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency acknowledged Kogan’s disappearance but pointedly did not acknowledge he held Israeli citizenship, referring to him only as being Moldovan. The Emirati Interior Ministry described Kogan as being “missing and out of contact.” “Specialized authorities immediately began search and investigation operations upon receiving the report,” the Interior Ministry said. The ministry later said that three “perpetrators” had been arrested “in record time” without giving additional details. Netanyahu told a regular Cabinet meeting later Sunday that he was “deeply shocked” by Kogan's disappearance and death. He said he appreciated the cooperation of the UAE in the investigation and that ties between the two countries would continue to be strengthened. Israel's largely ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, condemned the killing and thanked Emirati authorities for "their swift action." He said he trusts they “will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.” Israel also again warned against all nonessential travel to the Emirates after Kogan's killing. “There is concern that there is still a threat against Israelis and Jews in the area,” a government warning issued Sunday said. Kogan was an emissary of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, a prominent and highly observant branch of ultra-Orthodox Judaism based in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood in New York City. It said he was last seen in Dubai. The UAE has a burgeoning Jewish community, with synagogues and businesses catering to kosher diners. The Rimon Market, a kosher grocery store that Kogan managed on Dubai’s busy Al Wasl Road, was shut Sunday. As the wars have roiled the region, the store has been the target of online protests by supporters of the Palestinians. Mezuzahs on the front and back doors of the market appeared to have been ripped off when an Associated Press journalist stopped by on Sunday. Kogan’s wife, Rivky, is a U.S. citizen who lived with him in the UAE. She is the niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, who was killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The UAE is an autocratic federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula and is also home to Abu Dhabi. Local Jewish officials in the UAE declined to comment. While the Israeli statement did not mention Iran, Iranian intelligence services have carried out past kidnappings in the UAE. Western officials believe Iran runs intelligence operations in the UAE and keeps tabs on the hundreds of thousands of Iranians living across the country. Iran is suspected of kidnapping and later killing British Iranian national Abbas Yazdi in Dubai in 2013, though Tehran has denied involvement. Iran also kidnapped Iranian German national Jamshid Sharmahd in 2020 from Dubai, taking him back to Tehran, where he was executed in October . ___ Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates Tia Goldenberg And Jon Gambrell, The Associated Press

They will host the Dallas Mavericks at 9:30 p.m. ET at Delta Center. The Jazz might want some stickum for this one as the team gave up 18 turnovers on Wednesday. The Jazz are headed into the match having just suffered their biggest loss since November 7th on Wednesday. They found themselves the reluctant recipients of a 122-103 punch to the gut against the Nuggets. Utah got off to an early lead (up 12 with 5:48 left in the first quarter), but sadly they weren't able to maintain that momentum. Despite the defeat, the Jazz had strong showings from Walker Kessler, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Collin Sexton, who went 9 for 16 en route to 26 points. The dominant performance also gave Kessler a new career-high in assists (five). Even though they lost, the Jazz smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season. Meanwhile, the Mavericks won against the Hawks on Monday with 129 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Wednesday. The Mavericks strolled past the Knicks with points to spare, taking the game 129-114. Dallas pushed the score to 90-71 by the end of the third, a deficit New York cut but never quite recovered from. The Mavericks' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Spencer Dinwiddie led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine assists. Utah has not been sharp recently as the team has lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Dallas, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-8. The Jazz skirted past the Mavericks 115-113 when the teams last played on November 14th. Do the Jazz have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mavericks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough. Dallas is a solid 6.5-point favorite against Utah, according to the latest NBA odds . The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 6.5-point spread, and stayed right there. The over/under is 233 points.
